Stone
Grow (1993)

Destiny
Destiny I need you
More than ever now
I need you to see me

Empathy
Empathy I need you
Sitting useless now
Can’t you see?

What were the words he said?
Hold your guns too high
Own your brother and his authority
At night she holds his picture
It don’t keep her warm inside
Goes to show you her naivete

Girl, I know
It’s hard for you to see
I give you everything that left of me
Nights growing colder
Here eyes so much older
You are so beautiful I hurts
It burns

Can we grow?
Can we grow?

Can I know
It’s hard for you to see
And I give you everything that’s left
Night’s growing colder
Here eyes so much older
You are so beautiful it hurts
It burns

Can we grow?
Can we grow?

Mike Garrigan on "Stone":

"Stone" is my least favorite song on the tape. I don't know what I was thinking here. I had a Pearl Jam fetish at the time, I guess. To some degree, I wanted to be Eddie Vedder and it really shows on this song. I used to enjoy belting this one out at the top of my lungs during my coffee house shows. It came off O.K. live, but this recording is really, really bad. I've recorded better stuff in a hotel room with my portable MD player. And, what's up with the flanger on everything? Not cool. Then again, it's not all that bad. I do like the way the lyric sheet came out, though. I can't remember if it was Ross or Marc Norris who drew that particular panel for the tape cover. I guess to some degree, the song is also a preview of what was to come. "Stone" and "i hate flowers" were the templates for Building a Hole. Songs like "Stay" and "Bitter" are major improvements on the performance style I constructed with Grow. Like many of my songs, people have also told me, "Man, that's my favorite one!" If you like it, fine. If you don't, I completely understand why.
