She wan't the be a president
Hey I Could Be
She wants to be an hourglass
She wants to be a superstar
Hey I Could Be
"I Could Be" came to me over Easter weekend in 1994. I didn’t realize that in college most people go home for Easter. I was practically the only person in my dorm that weekend. There wasn’t much to do. So, I wrote. "I Could Be" was the newest of the songs to be recorded in that summer session. That writing day was the quickest I’ve ever written a complete song; I wrote it in ten minutes. It has great lyrics. Unfortunately, I recorded it way too slow. I don’t like how this one came out. In later performances of the song, I picked up the pace quite a bit favoring a light strum to a finger-picking style. Conrad pointed out that I was "kind of ripping off" Counting Crows’s "Round Here." I admit the chorus has similar chords, but even my song isn’t that whiny. I love "Round Here," but I don’t get that vibe from "I Could Be." Still, it’s a weird feeling when you write something that comes directly from your heart and then someone tells you you’ve ripped off something else. The song makes a simple statement: it’s hard to be a woman in a man’s world. That week, I was struggling with gender issues. Why is it O.K. for a guy to go to class looking like a complete slob and a gal has to put so much effort into her looks, even before stepping out the door? Seemed unfair to me at the time. Still does.
She wants to be superman
Supermen are men
She's thinking with her hands again
Taking off her glasses and
Nothing seems to happen
Presidents are men
She's thinking with her eyes again
Thinking that a woman can
Be something un-American
Everything you need
Hey I thinking with my feet
And I'm loosing next to nothing
That's the hardest part
But hey
At least I got that far
But hey
At least I got that far
With the perfect tan
She's thinking with her skin again
Avoiding cancer
Like one up in her sky
She's thinking with her nails again
Biting them
Biting them
Everything you need
Hey I thinking on my knees
And I'm holding on to nothing
That's the hardest part
But hey
At least I got that far
But hey
At least I got that far
Hey
