The Chlorox Metaphor
Building a Hole (1994)
Live at the Evening Muse (2006)

She...
She...
She...

Well begin me now,
And don't expect me to complicate you
I don't see how
I could've ever let you down
She thinks twice
Rotting under dripping eyes
You need to let her down
Wrinkled by her perspiration

And the guilt weighs down
In between the pinched skin
And everything works out
And I've become a clown
She moving south
Leaving where it's easier
But she never meant to hate me so much
Never meant to be a scene change

But she's burning out again
And she's burning out again
She's burning out again

She drinks her alcohol like chloroform
To evaporate her head
In to the ground she sinks too low
Forgot to wash out the Clorox and it shows
I played the part too well
And I swear that I'm a liar now
She's become a star
And I've become the metaphor

She's burning out again
She's burning out again
She's burning out again
She's burning out
Burning out
Burning out
Burning out

Mike Garrigan on "Chlorox Metaphor":

"The Clorox Metaphor" is one of my favorite songs on Building a Hole. I love how it picks up. The tuning is crazy. The song is powerful and exciting to perform. I realized years later that it’s much easier to play in standard tuning. I used E A D C B E with a capo on the fifth fret for the recording. The song was inspired by a letter I had gotten that summer. It was from a lady friend of mine. She noted in the letter that she was writing by the pool. The paper was a bit wrinkled, ostensibly from sweat. Kind of gross, but I took the idea and ran with it. Most of the scenario is fictional, but the letter was real. Collapsis did a rhythm track of "The Clorox Metaphor" during a demo session, but we never got around to doing the overdubs. It wasn’t a priority, so we never even got around to playing it live, either. Although, we had been known to play "Orange" quite a bit during our first year together. I was severely disappointed when I got the second printing of Building a Hole back from the printer in 2000. Someone ran a spell check on my master file and screwed up a lot of type settings. "Clorox" was changed to "color" for some reason. I was really unhappy. I also realized that I couldn’t get a refund, so I just opted to sell the disc as is. A good way to know if you have a second printing is if your copy says "Color Metaphor" for track three.
