Brand New Day
Grow (1993)

Hey there
Don’t hide behind those eyes
I should know it just ain’t fair
Break the halo down
Wrap your black rainbow around your head
Tonight

Go on and on and on and on about
Hey, just about everything you know
So well

Go on and on and on and on about
Eskimos and exclamation points on her furniture
It’s ok for you to feel alone
Just don’t run when you hide

Feels so gray and cold on the inside
Hey, it’s a brand new day
Or can’t you tell

It’s you that said
Your friend can make the same face as the girl
She seemed so crazy then
And I would love to find some place where I can go
I could stand here forever

Go on and on and on and on about
Hey, just about everything you know
So well

Go on and on and on and on about
Eskimos and punctuation points on her furniture
It’s ok for you to feel alone
Just don’t run when you hide

Feels so great and cold on the inside
Hey, it’s a brand new day
Or can’t you tell

Ain’t no rain today
Cause I’ve been walking on her sunshine
But it’s ok
It’s a brand new day
It’s ok
It’s a brand new day

Mike Garrigan on "Brand New Day":

Ross White, my good friend and confidant at the time Grow was made, absolutely hated the song "Brand New Day" with every inch of his life. When I played it, I could feel his cringing a mile away. When I played the song in my dorm room I felt a disturbance in the force somewhere in Eringhaus Dorm. It's true. He liked to call it "Bad Hair Day." For all of its trouble, the song brings a bit of levity to the EP. It's the only song in a major key on the tape. And, it's generally positive. I think it may be the best recording of the four songs, too. Unfortunately, the song is also a portrait of my vanity. Apparently, I hadn't learned an all-important lesson: writing a song for a girl you barely know is not a good way to "break the ice." Most of the gals I've tried this on were more terrified than flattered. It's a sign of the times, I guess. The lyrics have everything to do with watching a movie called Heathers in a young lady's dorm room. I decided to stand the entire movie, partly because I had no where to sit and partly because I was too afraid to ask for a seat. I didn't mind. Who does when you're in the company of someone you admire? I guess the real reason I stood the whole time is that I wanted her remember me as the guy who stood while Heathers was on. Times were hard. All's fair. Did I mention I was 18 when I wrote this thing?
